Plant Life at Arabia Mountain Heritage Area

Arabia Mountain is home to two Federally protected plant species, several other rare plants, and plants that are unique to these granite outcrop environments, such as the brilliant red Diamorpha or Small's Stonecrop. The granite outcrops, fields, forests and wetlands at Arabia host a diverse selection of trees, shrubs, mosses, lichens and flowers that can be enjoyed year-round. Beautiful flora you'll find here include Sunnybells, Sparkleberry, Yellow Daisy, Fringetree, and Georgia Oak.

Mosses and lichens are highly adapted for the rock outcrop. Mosses have very shallow roots, and may stay dormant for very long periods of time. As soon as the rain comes again, they "green up."

Lichens are a union of two substances, which live in a symbiotic relationship. These two substances are algae and a fungus. When they "take a liking" to each other, they create lichen. Most lichens are light green, but some are dark green, yellow and other colors. Lichens grow all over the rock outcrop. It is very fragile - especially when dry - and very susceptible to foot damage. Please avoid walking on lichen.
